This is what a Salt Lake City cafe might have looked like in 1994.
On January 1, 1995, the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act went into effect, banning smoking in most places where the public gathers.
Places like malls, theaters, stores, offices, public schools, colleges, museums, fitness clubs, arenas, restaurants, and yes, cafes.
The act also covered public vehicles like buses, trains, and taxis.
Even places like restrooms and elevators that are built inside larger places were covered.
In 2006, an amendment was passed that extended the smoking ban to other places, including private schools, social clubs, and additional worksites.
The amendment also requires all private clubs, bars, and taverns to be smoke-free by January 1, 2009.
Because of this act, we’re all better protected from secondhand smoke, the killer of more than 50,000 Americans each year.
